Age Care Association is a fully registered, non-profit making organisation staffed entirely by volunteers. Our Spanish registration number is 6282 – CIF – G92487602 (Registro de Asociaciones de Andalucia). The majority of our work is helping older British people living in the Province of Malaga, but we do not exclude other nationalities that speak English. We provide welfare information, practical support and two help lines (Telephones: 691761088, and 655903182).
The Association also has a hospital and home visiting team. Other volunteers visit people in Care Homes when necessary. As part of our work we have repatriated some individuals to the UK, where there are more caring facilities and access to benefits unavailable in Spain. Some of our volunteers have had careers in nursing, education, psychology and other caring professions and are accustomed to listening in a sympathetic and kind manner. We work closely with the British Consulate, Royal British Legion, and branches of the International Lions.
At the present time we have drop-in centres in three locations on the Costa del Sol where people can chat, share experiences and get information about many aspects of living in Spain. Our volunteers can give confidential help and guidance about the many different problems affecting older people.
DROP-IN CENTRES

We also operate a Charity Shop that is instrumental in helping us meet the expenses required to operate and assist our clients. The ACA Charity Shop offers a wide range of items in excellent condition in a very organized and cheery setting. There is everything from books to household items, fashion accessories to children’s toys. Many items have never been used or are in mint condition. The proceeds from the shop sales go to support the work of Age Care Association in providing services to the English speaking elderly in the community.

It is impossible to assess accurately the number of Britons who have relocated to Spain, nor the number of retirees. An influential publication ‘Brits Abroad’ published by the Institute for Public Policy Research, estimates that there may be as many as 990,000 Britons in Spain, including long term and part of a year (page 17). Of this number, it is estimated 74,636 are UK State Pensioners (page 105). It is difficult to establish the exact number of British retirees who have migrated to the Costa del Sol, but what is clear is that there are probably many thousands who live permanently, or for a substantial part of a year in Andalusia, particularly in the Province of Malaga. Volunteers who work for Age Care Association during the past five years have experienced increasing numbers of older English-speaking people requiring assistance.
To enable us to continue and expand our work to meet anticipated demand we need more volunteers. If you feel that you would like to volunteer and help us in our work and commitment to older English-speaking people, contact us on a telephone number below. As a priority we need people who speak both Spanish and English, volunteers who can drive and help with transportation. We also need the services of fully trained and registered nurses to work with our existing nurses.
It is abundantly clear that people are living longer with possible health, social, emotional, psychological and community problems and needs. Our Association is doing as much as we can to improve the lifestyles of vulnerable older people on the Coast and inland, and with your help we can do more.
We hope that you find our website of interest. It is based on experience gathered over a number of years working with older people. What we have covered reflects some of the major issues, concerns and aspects of information, which we believe will help people to enjoy their time in Andalusia. We believe that the information contained on the website is correct at the time of posting. You will understand that there will inevitably be differences as telephone numbers change, new benefits become available, governmental regulations alter, and research indicates other issues needing recognition, and other official bodies affecting older people make decisions. Please note the date that the article was written or last reviewed for an indication of its history.
We would like to thank the La Cala Lions and the Gemini Masonic Lodge for their generous financial support, which helps us to care for people in need. Also, the many individuals who have contributed in various ways, including our two Patrons, Baroness Golding and Bruce McIntyre, MBE.
