Santa Visits Age Care Pensioners

A group of elderly pensioners enjoyed a lunch arranged by Age Care Association thanks to the generosity of local businessman Garry Leigh. The guests, some of whom are housebound and frail and others who are struggling to care for partners, were transported to the Hotel Tamisa Golf in Mijas Costa for a Christmas lunch. This year Age Care Association had feared that they would not be able to hold this special lunch due to lack of funds, because of increased requests for help from Costa del Sol residents. However, Garry Leigh stepped in as our benefactor and donated the sum of €3,000, to be used for a Christmas lunch for the pensioners and also for the welfare volunteers who spend their time helping them.

A three-course lunch was enjoyed by all, with everyone joining in the carol singing and appreciating the entertainment. After lunch Santa arrived with his presents and Santa’s little helpers, one of whom was Steve Jones, British Consul, went around the room giving presents to all the pensioners. For many of those at the lunch this was the only special meal they will get this Christmas. The president, Charles Betty, accepted the large cheque for €3,000 from Ron Pettit on behalf of Mr Garry Leigh. One of the guests, Mrs Pat Underhill, who was recently widowed stood up and thanked Age Care Association for the work that they do for the elderly along the Costa del Sol. She especially thanked Lesley and Don Cameron for all their help and said that “they had given her a lifeline for which she was so grateful”.

Age Care would like to thank all the various clubs and associations who support the organisation and would like to wish them all a Prosperous New Year. Age Care Association can be contacted on the helpline on 691 761088/655 903182

About Age Care Association

Age Care Association is a fully registered, non-profit making organisation staffed entirely by volunteers. Our Spanish registration number is 6282 – CIF – G92487602 (Registro de Asociaciones de Andalucia). The majority of our work is helping older British people living in the Province of Malaga, but we do not exclude other nationalities that speak English. We provide welfare information, practical support and two help lines (Telephones: 691761088, and 655903182). The Association also has a hospital and home visiting team. Other volunteers visit people in Care Homes when necessary. As part of our work we have repatriated some individuals to the UK, where there are more caring facilities and access to benefits unavailable in Spain. Some of our volunteers have had careers in nursing, education, psychology and other caring professions and are accustomed to listening in a sympathetic and kind manner. We work closely with the British Consulate, Royal British Legion, and branches of the International Lions.
